The Convento Building at the San Fernando Mission is the only original building remaining. After secularization, Andres Pico, brother to Pio Pico, the last Mexican Governor of California, used the Covenento Building. During the mission era, the building was divided into two sections, the Padres quarters and the hospice.

The Convento Building, which was completed in 1822 after 12 years of work, is 243 feet long and 60 feet wide. It is the largest structure in any of the missions. The 21 Roman-type arches on the south corridor have, for countless years, made a favorite photographic and art subject.
