Most of the designs on the walls at the San Fernando Mission are native in expression and execution. There are six large arched indentions on the thick adobe walls. This feature is found only in the San Fernando Mission.

The chapel's walls are divided into separate panels by eight structural pilasters. They are spaced at even distances and add to the ornamentation. The chapel has eighteen recessions for windows. All, but one window, are located on the south wall. Thirteen of the recessions are decorative. The bright colors on the walls retain much of the original brightness.

Wavy Lines, painted by the Indians and symbolic of the River of Life, decorate not only the arches in the chapel, but other Sections as well. The Indians were allowed to give free expression to familiar features of their every day life.

In one of the six arched bays in the San Fernando chapel is found an Indian's interpretation of the crucifixion. This arched bays are found only in this mission.

Native in expression and execution, most of the designs confirm that the padres showed little skill in matters of interior design. Colors were obtained from herbs, roots and berries found in the area.
